Hello there, my wonderful friends! And happy November 2020! These certainly are "unusual" times, but we indeed are receiving "unusual" blessings (in the BEST sense of the word). I have an invitation to extend to each one of you today... But first, a little background.... A few weeks ago I was listening to an address given by Dieter F. Uchtdorf entitled "Receiving a Testimony of Light and Truth" (from October 2014 General Conference). While the whole talk is wonderful, a certain phrase jumped Continue Reading
Start
It's been six years since I first performed the music on my album "Daughters in His Kingdom" and released the accompanying CD. I created a presentation with quotes, words from the book that inspired the songs (Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society), and my own experiences in an effort to share these glorious messages with as many as would listen! From 2014-2016 I was blessed to travel throughout Utah, Idaho, and even to Arizona where I presented this program along Continue Reading
Someone Like Me
"Someone Like Me" is the second song that I began to work on in my Daughters in His Kingdom set. The story that inspired its lyrics was the first to really light a fire of inspiration in my heart. You'll read more about that below. I initially notated this song completely by hand, but after the time that it took to do this one and "Daughters in His Kingdom" via pencil and staff paper only, my husband and I decided it would be worthwhile to invest in music notation software. It was a wise Continue Reading
Look to the Light
The Relief Society was organized on March 17, 1842. By August of that same year, their membership reached over 1,100 women. “Sisters in Nauvoo clamored to join the Relief Society. They were excited to give temporal and spiritual aid in an organized, authorized way. They also recognized the unparalleled opportunity to be taught by a prophet in preparation for higher spiritual knowledge and the blessings of the temple. They loved being unified with one another and with Continue Reading
Seek
There is great power in what we can accomplish as we seek to strengthen the kingdom of God here upon the earth. As our understanding of gospel principles and temple covenants increases, so does our strength against trial and tribulation. The formal organization of the Relief Society was discontinued prior to the exodus West in February of 1846, but the sisters did not lose their firm conviction to cleave unto the covenants that they had made. In 1867, President Brigham Young felt impressed Continue Reading
Circle of Sisters
As each generation of Relief Society follows in the footsteps of the generations before them, our circle of influence has increased. We are now a worldwide circle of sisters. In 1980, President Boyd K. Packer and his wife, Donna, visited a Relief Society in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia). At the time, it was difficult to obtain visas. The faithful members there had lived under “conditions of unspeakable oppression” for many years. As they met Continue Reading
Sweet is the Work
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, members are given many opportunities to minister to one another as the Savior did. Recently, the program formally referred to as Home and Visiting Teaching was retired, and simple Ministering took its place. Daughters in My Kingdom; The History and Work of Relief Society has an entire chapter dedicated to the evolution of sisters ministering through Visiting Teaching and shares incredible stories of the good that's come about through women Continue Reading
Power of God
President Gordon B. Hinckley taught: “There is strength and great capacity in the women of this Church. There is leadership and direction, a certain spirit of independence, and yet great satisfaction in being a part of this, the Lord’s kingdom, and of working hand in hand with the priesthood to move it forward” (Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society, pg. 125) Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the priesthood of God has been restored to the earth in its fulness. The Continue Reading
Heaven Every Day
Women have such strength and power in the home. Whether married or widowed, single or divorced, we women have been given the sacred task to love and lead those within our sphere of influence. The blessings of our efforts will be great and eternal. Sister Barbara Thompson, who later served in the Relief Society general presidency, was in the Tabernacle when President Hinckley read the proclamation to the world on the family:“I felt the significance of the message. I also Continue Reading
Daughters in His Kingdom
After I had finished my first reading of the book Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society, this is the first song that started to come to my mind and heart. I was very new to songwriting. I'd only ever completed and shared ONE song before sitting down to notate this one. I wrote it out the "old-fashioned" way with a pencil and staff paper. It was long and arduous. But it was a beautiful process. Now it's the pinnacle number in the program I present and on my album. Continue Reading
